The world is a challenging place. Coasting through college is no way to prepare for the future. You want your child to learn how to work hard, juggle priorities, interpret vast amounts of conflicting information and think on his or her feet, just as he or she will on the job.

Graduate schools routinely evaluate how colleges stack up, using numerical ratings to "weight" the grades given by various undergraduate institutions. Educational effectiveness is something that you should keep in mind as you consider the rigor and selectivity of the colleges.
